2018 Sunscreen Basics

Today we will cover:
  • The types of sunscreen available
  • The differences between the two types of sunscreen
  • Things to consider when buying sunscreen

While the assortment of brands may lead you to beleive there are hundreds of different TYPES of sunscreem, there are in fact only to main types: there are only two main types of sunscreen: physical and chemical
chemical sunscreens absorb the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays while physical sunscreens reflect them.
Chemical sunscreens absorb UVA or UVB rays and contain ingredients such as avobenzone and benzophenone. Chemical sunscreens often contain UVB-absorbing chemicals only; however, there are some chemical sunscreens that contain both UVB and UVA absorbers. A new over-the-counter sunscreen was recently developed that contains mexoryl, an ingredient that offers protection from both UVA and UVB radiation.
Physical sunscreens act as a shield and reflect both UVA and UVB light and contain ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Physical sunscreens are a good choice for people with allergies to chemical sunscreens [source: American Academy of Dermatology].
Broad-spectrum sunscreens, which contain both chemical and physical ingredients, are also available.
Aside from knowing the difference between physical and chemical sunscreens, you should also note the product's sun protection factor, or SPF, into consideration when purchasing sunscreen. The SPF is a measurement of the amount of UVB protection the sunscreen offers. A sunscreen should also have UVA protection, and although there is current standard rating system that measures UVA protection, the package should clearly state UVA protection.
